SIRPLUS is a nationwide impact startup in Germany dedicated to combating food waste. We bring surplus food back into circulation by offering it for sale in our online shop . Through direct collaboration with 700 producers and wholesalers, we rescue valuable food that food banks don't collect but is perfectly edible. In this way, we bring the issue of food waste into the mainstream and encourage society, politics, and business to rethink their practices. 18 million tons of food are wasted in Germany every year. That's equivalent to a truckload every minute! According to the WWF, 10 million tons of this waste is avoidable, and several million tons of that are wasted by producers, manufacturers, and wholesalers – where we can rescue it.
Almost half of all food waste in Germany occurs in private households, which is why we not only rescue food but also raise awareness and promote mindful use of valuable resources for future generations. Our goal is to increase appreciation for food through our business model, media presence, and educational work. We want to make it easy for everyone to be part of the solution and do good with their daily consumption.
Currently, over 8 billion people live on Earth, and we produce enough food to feed 12 billion people. The amount of food wasted annually alone could feed all the world's hungry four times over. Beyond the ethical disaster, food waste is also an ecological catastrophe, responsible for 10% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. For good reason, "zero hunger" and "responsible consumption and production" are among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations .
