It is important to understand the difference between the best before date and the use-by date when it comes to food:

Best before date (BBD): The best before date indicates until when a food product retains its optimal quality. However, virtually all products remain perfectly edible for weeks, months, and sometimes even years beyond this date if stored correctly.

Use-by date: The use-by date indicates the date by which a product must be consumed. It is only found on a few products, such as minced meat or fresh fish. Products that have passed their use-by date should no longer be eaten and may no longer be sold. At SIRPLUS, however, we do not sell any food products with a use-by date.

SIRPLUS rescues surplus and expired food directly from producers. The main reasons are that the products have too short a remaining shelf life, meaning the time until the best-before date is reached. Supermarkets generally only buy products from producers if they have at least 50% of their remaining shelf life. Other reasons include seasonal goods, such as those from Christmas or Easter, or changes in packaging or design. We also rescue products resulting from overproduction or those that have passed their best-before date. All expired products are inspected by us and are still perfectly safe to eat.
